Every New Year, millions of Americans rush to sign up at their local gym as part of their New Year’s resolution to get in shape, and improve their personal wellness. However, if you’re like me, it’s only a matter of time until your motivation drops and you keep the gym membership card tucked away deep in your wallet. A recent survey of gyms showed that 4 out of 5 gym memberships go unused.
The issue lies with the traditional gym setup. With all the equipment and machines, it’s easy to become lost and frustrated. Gyms lack the instruction needed to see the quick progress most of us are hoping for. Also, with no feedback or support, it easy to talk yourself out of hitting the gym. Over the past couple years, gym memberships have been declining as people find new and more engaging ways to stay in shape. From 2011 to 2012, gym memberships have seen a decrease of over a million people.
On the other hand, fitness classes, meetups and social sport leagues are on the rise. After attending a couple yoga meetups from meetup.com, its easy to see why. These activities give the instruction and support gym members are looking for while remaining fun and engaging. The friends I made supported me and kept me coming. With fitness group becoming even more accessible, it’s easy to see why gyms might become a thing of the past.
